In the myth of Daphne and Apollo, Daphne, in her desperation to escape the pursuing Apollo, begs the gods to save her. They hear her prayer and change her into a laurel tree. My abstract interpretation here is that the desire to escape one’s fears can leave one ultimately immobile and trapped within the self. She shrinks into herself, while pushing away from the outside. Tethers creep around her body and the threads of her skirt seem to be consuming her. On the other hand, as everything in life has its opposite and one thing can always lead to the other, perhaps she actually is remaking herself and coming to light.
